Domestic violence is a dreadful form of abuse. The fact that two people are killed by their current or former partner each week in England and Wales shows just how urgent is the need for action. The government is committed to ensuring that the police and other agencies have the tools necessary to tackle domestic violence to bring offenders to justice and ensure victims have the support they need to rebuild their lives.

Facts Lists on Domestic Violence

All forms of domestic abuse have one purpose: to gain and maintain control over the victim. Abusers use many tactics to exert power over their spouse or partner: dominance.

In Jekyll and Hyde behaviors, the abuser may fluctuate between sudden rages and false joviality toward the victim; or may simply show a very different "face" to the outside world than to the victim

HOMETRUTHS Supports Proposal to
Make Domestic Abuse a Crime in the UK

MPs from all parties are backing a new bill proposal to provide a legal framework for criminalising Domestic Abuse in the UK.

Currently there is no specific offence of domestic abuse and perpetrators can only be charged with a specific crime such as battery and assault, rape, harassment etc, however under this new proposal domestic abuse would become a specific offence allowing for examination of an offenders pattern of behaviour and course of conduct over a period of time, rather than prosecuting for one target offence such as actual bodily harm (ABH).

The new law would define domestic abuse as "intentionally, wilfully or recklessly causing, or attempting to cause, physical injury or psychological harm to a person" and would carry a maximum sentence of up to 14 years in prison

When you see the warning signs of domestic abuse, it is important to act quickly to protect the ones you love. The topic of domestic abuse is a sensitive one for anyone involved in the situation, which is why it is always best to be discrete and supportive.
